I had to single out this particular stall at the National Youth Market on King Street over the weekend. This young woman travelled up from Stevenage in Hertfordshire to take part. She bakes cakes. But what wonderfully decorated cakes. This one, based on the Disney representation of the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ characters was created for a very lucky child as a birthday cake. Dad was a billionaire apparently. It took Demi, the young woman who runs the company, a week and a half to complete. It looks crazy and as if it’s about to collapse and captures the atmosphere and themes of the classic book. It’s supported inside by dowling. I suppose the original one is long gone but she recreated this one to showcase her skills. It certainly does that. Does it taste as good as it looks? Well I’m sure the original did but this one contains polystyrene instead of cake as it’s a model. If I’d spent a week and a half creating something like this (never going to happen) I doubt if I’d want to see it being cut. It would be like when I had to watch the garden I built in St Ann’s Square being taken apart after the Dig the City Garden Festival a couple of summers ago.

A sea themed cake…

And I like the Halloween cake…
